Droopy eyelids are a common ageing-related concern that develops from stretched skin and weakened muscles around the eye area. This concern can continue to progress as a person gets older, which gives the face a weary look. In significant cases of droopy upper eyelids, the skin can start to cover over the eye, leading to difficulties with vision.
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can create a long-term solution for removing loose skin on the eyelids to help restore a youthful and refreshed look.

Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or a combination of both. When addressing the upper eyelids, an incision is made along the natural crease and excess skin is then trimmed. In some cases, some of the muscle and / or fat is also removed before the wound is closed. For the lower lid, the process is similar but the incision is made just beneath the eyelashes.
Our treatments for the face and eyes are carried out under local or general anaesthetic. Here at REAL we use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.
After the procedure we insert a lubricant to the eyes, so you may experience some temporary blurred vision, along with: swelling, bruising, watery eyes, tenderness, sensitivity and numb eyelids. We will monitor your recovery through a series of follow-up appointments, and the final outcome is usually apparent in approx. 4 weeks.
A surgical procedure can provide long term results for your concerns. However, the skin around the eyes will continue to age which means given time, it may start to stretch once again. For most of our patients, reducing the look of droopy eyelids greatly improves and a repeat procedure is seldom needed.
