JOWLS

CONDITION

JOWLS

As we age, many of us will develop jowls. Jowls are the areas of ‘sagging’ skin that sit just below the jawline. When we mature, our natural production of collagen and elastin (the proteins that work hard to keep our skin voluminous and taut) begins to slow down.

Fatty deposits may also start to gather as the skin starts to lose its ability to ‘bounce back’, and this can contribute to the heavy appearance of the jowl.

When ageing causes a slackening of the skin as well as diminished support to the facial structure, we may start to see the signs of jowls forming. As the collagen and elastin depreciates, and the connective tissues are no longer able to support the skin on our face as well as they once did, we need to find viable ways to help replace lost volume and tighten the skin. Dermal fillers are a fantastic way to lessen the appearance of jowls and offer support to the structure of the jawline as well as firm up the loose skin in this area.

Contributors to early ageing, and slackening of the skin are; natural changes such as genetics, lost collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, or lifestyle factors such as; smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet and weight loss.

In advanced ageing, when the bones of the face have started to shrink, the skin, muscles and fats that drape the facial framework will begin to slide. This happens gradually over time, so with earlier intervention we can use non-invasive techniques to dramatically improve the tone, texture and tightness of the face, helping preserve your youthful appearance for longer.
