The REAL Clinic Talks Guide to Tummy Tucks

'In this blog, The REAL Clinic addresses common questions about abdominoplasty, covering everything from types of tummy tuck to recovery.'

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the abdominal muscles. It is especially effective for people who have lost significant weight or have stretched abdominal muscles due to pregnancy. The result is a firmer and smoother abdominal contour which can increase both confidence and comfort.

What are the different types of tummy tucks?

At The REAL Clinic, we offer many different types of tummy tucks that are personalised to your individual needs and body types:

Mini tummy tuck: The mini tummy tuck is best for individuals with minimal skin laxity. It focuses on the lower abdomen below the belly button or navel, and involves a smaller incision and generally a shorter recovery time.

Full tummy tuck: The full tummy tuck is a surgical method to address the upper and lower abdomen with a hip to hip incision, allowing for extensive removal of the excess skin and fat along with tightening of the muscles.

Extended tummy tuck: The extended tummy tuck is designed for those with significant skin laxity. It contours the abdomen, flanks and sometimes the lower back, and is often recommended for people who have lost a substantial amount of weight.

Brazilian tummy tuck: The Brazilian tummy tuck is a variation of the traditional tummy tuck, and involves a lower and longer incision, facilitating more extensive skin removal and muscle tightening. This surgical technique tends to result in a flatter stomach and improved waistline contour.

Fleur de Lis tummy tuck: For those with substantial horizontal and vertical excess skin, which may occur after significant weight loss, the Fleur de Lis technique uses vertical and horizontal incisions to create a fleur de lis shape, permitting more comprehensive and extensive skin removal and firmer abdominal contour.

During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate type of tummy tuck tailored for you based on your individual anatomy, health and desired results.

How long does the surgery take?

Tummy tuck procedures generally take between 2–5 hours, depending on the patient’s individual needs and type of tummy tuck. Your surgeon will provide a more precise time estimate during your consultation.

When can I expect to be mobile again?

Most patients find that they have reasonable mobility within 4 –5 days after surgery.

Do I need to wear special garments?

Yes, it is essential to wear a compression garment after surgery. This garment supports your abdomen, decreases swelling and promotes better healing. You will be advised to wear it consistently as directed by your surgeon, and normally for two months, for optimal results.

Can I sleep on my front?

It is best to avoid sleeping on your front for the first 4 weeks following surgery. During this time, patients are advised to sleep on their back with the upper body slightly elevated, reducing the pressure on the abdomen and supporting healing.

When can I shower?

Most patients can shower about 2 days subsequent to surgery. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions based on your progress and recovery. It is important to avoid submerging the surgical incisions in water until your surgeon confirms it is safe to do so.

How long do I need off work?

Most patients need approximately 2–3 weeks off work to focus on their recovery. This can differ depending on the type of work you do. If your job is physically demanding, you may need additional time to ensure a full recovery.

When can I return to exercise?

While reasonable mobility is usually regained soon after surgery, more strenuous activities and exercise should be avoided for about 8 weeks. Your surgeon will provide personalised advice on when to gradually reintroduce physical activities into your daily routine and lifestyle.

How long does full recovery take?

Most patients achieve full recovery within 8 weeks. During this period, the swelling subsides and you can resume your regular daily activities. The follow up process with your surgeon will help monitor your healing and safeguard the best chance of the optimal outcome you want.

'One of the most common concerns I hear from patients is about hooded upper eyelids, giving them an aged and tired appearance that is completely at odds with how they feel. The great news is that a blepharoplasty procedure on the eyelids can be hugely helpful at a relatively low cost and short recovery time.'

As fun as the festive season is, it can play havoc with our skin, meaning often we enter the new year with a dull, dry complexion or suffering breakouts and darkened eyes circles as a result of too many late nights knocking back the cocktails! On top of this our skin is constantly enduring temperature switches from chilly outdoor conditions to centrally heated indoor environments. But don’t despair as we enter in to the new year! Just as we start fresh with resolutions and goals for the year ahead, it’s also time to revitalise your skin care regime! Here are some of our top tips to get your skin glowing again: 1. Hydrate Our bodies are 60% water and our blood is 90% water. From flushing out toxins to preventing acne, water is one of the most inexpensive solutions for skin issues. It also helps promote a healthy gut and aids digestion, flushing out toxins to help your skin remain clear. If you struggle to drink 2-3 litres of water a day why don’t you try adding natural flavours such as lemon/lime slices, mint or cucumber. 2. Eat the rainbow Often when we enter the new year we start new diet regimes which focus on restriction. A different way of approaching this is to think about the range of nutritious food to include in our diet rather than what we are taking away. Simply put, eating the rainbow involves eating fruit and vegetables of different colours every day. Focussing on eating a variety of colours increases your intake of different nutrients and antioxidants which have an anti-inflammatory effect, benefitting your skin. 3. Choose skin care products formulated for your skin type Get to know your skin type so you can select the right choices when it comes to what products to use. Skin types include: -normal, characterised by hydrated and comfortable feeling skin -dry, which can feel tight, flaky and scaly -oily, characterised by shiny skin, prone to breakouts -combination, which is when the skin is oily in the T zone area but not elsewhere 4. Invest time in a good skincare routine Establishing a consistent daily skincare routine will help a long way towards getting a clear, glowing complexion. Start off by double cleansing with cool or luke-warm water. The first cleanse can move dirt around your face so by doing it twice you’re getting deeper into your pores. Use a toner to help further balance your complexion, tighten pores and restore nutrients to the skin that cleansing may have removed. Follow this with a vitamin c serum in the morning as it can help collagen production and acts as an antioxidant and alternate this with retinol at night. Retinol can prevent acne and slow the aging process. Finish up with a high-quality moisturiser and SPF. 5. Use a good quality product range If you are wanting to upgrade your skincare routine or perhaps the products that you’re currently using don’t work well for you, you may consider using a cosmeceutical range. Cosmeceuticals are medical grade skincare products that offer both medicinal and cosmetic benefits allowing you to treat unwanted blemishes and concerns without prescription or procedure. They are formulated using medical grade ingredients to penetrate deep into your skin and deliver stronger better results compared over-the-counter products. They are popular choices when it comes to targeting common skin problems such as fine lines, dryness, acne scarring, pigmentation, sun damage and minor signs of ageing. 6. Wear sunscreen daily Always wear an SPF even in winter as the sun’s rays still get through and sun damage is one of the biggest contributers to premature ageing, leading to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, spider veins and an uneven complexion. 7. Have professional in-clinic treatments Besides promoting relaxation, regular professional facial treatments can provide many benefits including noticeable improvements to your skin texture, tone and appearance. Facials can also help improve circulation to optimise cell health and collagen production. Here at REAL clinic we offer a range of skin care and aesthetics treatments, designed to make you look and feel fabulous. If you’re looking for an advanced facial which exfoliates, extracts impurities and rehydrates, then why not try a HydraFacial. The HydraFacial is one of the most popular clinic-based facial treatments right now. It’s so popular, that one is performed every 15 seconds around the world. The reason why? Because it targets many of the most common skincare concerns like dryness and signs of aging with little to no side effects. For those unfamiliar, this treatment is a medical-grade resurfacing treatment that clears out your pores and hydrates your skin. The four-step treatment includes cleansing, exfoliating, extracting, and hydrating the skin with serums that are infused into pores with the HydraPeel Tip, a pen-like device. Profhilo acts as a fantastic antiaging solution. It’s a highly purified injectable hyaluronic acid skin booster. With special patented technology, Profhilo works by hydrating the skin from inside, like an internal moisturiser stimulating the production of elastin and collagen. This helps improve skin tone and skin laxity and results in glowing, radiant, smooth skin. SkinPen microneedling can improve your complexion and texture of the skin, it can even improve certain types of acne scarring. It’s clinically proven to be effective for women and men of all skin types and tones. A natural and effective treatment, nothing injected, no chemicals or heat applied. SkinPen works by creating microchannels, targeting precise depth of the skin stimulating your skins natural wound healing process, producing elastin and collagen to rejuvenate your skin from the inside out. We also offer a range of aesthetic injectable treatments. More details can be found in the ‘treatment’ menu on our website. 8. Exfoliate Exfoliating is a great way of getting rid of dead skin cells leaving your complexion looking brighter, however, over exfoliation can cause your skin to react with excess oil production or breakouts, so best kept to minimum with a once a week session. 9. Don’t forget your neck and décolletage Your neck and chest area need attention too. These are often neglected areas that are prone to sun damage and ageing. 10. Moisturise like a pro There is a correct way to apply moisturiser! Massage your moisturiser in an upward motion, moving out and away from the centre of the face. Around the eyes use a specially formulated eye cream. Let’s make 2023 the best skin year yet! Contact us today for bookings and for helpful advice on the treatments we offer.
