INTRODCUTION

The Battersea Clinic recognises the urgent global challenge posed by climate change and is committed to decreasing our environmental impact while continuing to provide the highest standard of care. Given this, we integrate sustainability into our daily operations and strategic decisions to support the health of our patients, staff and the wider community.

OBJECTIVES

·     Contribute to the national target for net zero emissions

·     Decrease the environmental footprint of administrative and clinical operations

·     Educate and engage staff and patients in environmentally responsible behaviour

·     Promote sustainable procurement and waste management

ENERGY AND RESOURCE EFFICIENCY

·     Digital solutions are preferred over paper wherever feasible

·     Energy efficient appliances and lighting are prioritised

·     Equipment, lights and systems are turned off when not in use

PROCUREMENT AND SUPPLY CHAIN

·     Only essential items are ordered, based on projected clinical need, to minimise overpurchasing and waste

·     Reusable instruments and recyclable materials are selected where safe and possible

·     Suppliers with environmentally friendly practices are preferred

SUSTAINABLE CLINICAL PRACTICE

·     Clinical supplies and consumables are assessed regularly for opportunities to switch to more sustainable alternatives

·     Single use plastics are reduced where safe alternatives exist

SUSTAINABLE ANAESTHETIC PRACTICE

Total intravenous anaesthesia is used exclusively for all cases under sedation and general anaesthesia, eliminating the use of halogenated and volatile anaesthetic agents which are known to be greenhouse gases.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

·     Waste is disposed of responsibly using clearly defined streams, namely: clinical waste; general waste; recyclable waste; and sharps disposal

·     Staff are trained in waste segregation to ensure compliance with local regulations and environmental best practice

STAFF ENGAGEMENT AND TRAINING

All staff are educated about the environmental impact of health care and their role in mitigating it. They are encouraged to raise ideas for improvement and report environmental concerns.

CONCLUSIONS

At The Battersea Clinic, we understand that caring for people includes caring for the planet. We are committed to delivering safe and effective clinical care in a way that respects and protects the environment for future generations.
