Sagging breasts (medically known as breast ptosis) occurs to some degree naturally as we age. When breasts begin to sag in younger years, this can be due to the breasts being large and heavy, as a result of pregnancy or breastfeeding, weight loss, hormone imbalance or simply by way of genetics.
The range of breast ptosis is measured by the position of the nipple in relation to the inframammary crease (the fold where the breast meets the chest). Where ageing is the cause, this is likely often due to the depletion of elastin in the skin. Elastin is a protein found within the skin that is responsible for keeping the skin tight and youthful, and gives it its ability to ‘bounce back’. As the elastin level begins to decrease, some of the skin’s supporting structure is compromised and with the weight of the breast pulling downward, the skin is less able to effectively support the weight and sagging can occur.
Extreme weight loss may leave the breast less voluminous as can breast feeding, and therefore the breast will take on a droopy appearance. Here at The REAL Clinic we can help restore voluminous breasts with the use of implants in breast augmentation surgery, which may also be accompanied by a breast lift procedure (mastopexy) where sagging is also a concern. If sagging breasts is the only concern, a mastopexy can be performed without the use of implants, in which we will lift and reshape the breast to give a more youthful, lifted shape.
