Gynaecomastia is a very common condition that refers to excess breast tissue or breast swelling in men. This concern is also known as ‘man boobs’ or ‘moobs’ and can cause a man to feel self conscious about his physique, specifically the appearance of his chest. At The REAL Clinic we perform a lot of male reduction surgeries, and can help you achieve a more proportionate, defined chest.

Male breasts can occur for many reasons including; excess fat, breast tissue or because of hormonal changes. That said, in most cases the underlying cause is unknown. Thankfully male breast reduction can help. This procedure can be performed by way of liposuction (when the swelling of the breast is largely due to excess fat deposits), by way of surgical excision (when glandular development has occurred) or even a combination of both. The appropriate technique will be decided following a pre-operative assessment, during which we will discuss your concerns as well your desired outcome.
At The REAL Clinic, male breast reduction surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic. We use total intravenous anaesthesia as it has greater potential benefits compared to other forms of anaesthesia. Intravenous anaesthesia is more rapid in onset, and elimination which allows for speedier recovery. Further benefits include; increased haemodynamic stability (stabilised blood flow), decreased risk of organ toxicity, decrease in surgical haemostasis (bleeding), reduced risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and improved, more predictable recovery.
There is likely to be some temporary numbness, swelling, bruising, tenderness and general discomfort following male breast reduction surgery which can last around a month. There will be some scarring following your surgery which is likely to fade over time. Other less common risks include; infection, numbness, rippling, dimpling or lumping under the skin as well as changes to nipple or breast sensation. Your specialist at REAL will furnish you with an appropriate post surgery care pack to aid successful healing.
You can typically allow around 2 weeks to recover from male breast reduction surgery. It would be advisable if possible to rest during this period and refrain from any stress inducing activities including going to work and driving. You should not resume activities such as going to the gym or sports for around 6 weeks post surgery and steps toward increased activity levels should be taken slowly.
