SAGGING SKIN

SAGGING SKIN

Sagging skin is a common problem for many people who are beginning to see signs of ageing. It’s largely caused by the reduced production of the skin’s natural hydrator, elastin, which gives it its ability to “bounce back”.

When combined with reduced collagen production and loss of subcutaneous fat, we can also see the skin begin to sag and the loss of volume makes us appear gaunt or withdrawn in the face. The production of collagen and elastin in our skin will naturally begin to decline in our late 20s, slightly more rapidly in our thirties and further accelerated in post-menopausal women.

Our diet and lifestyle choices also contribute to the speed at which our skin ages. Smoking, unprotected sun exposure and poor diet, hydration and sleep will all accelerate the ageing process.

Weight loss can also be a factor in the development of sagging skin, as when an individual has lost weight over an extended period of time, their skin may have stretched in order to make room for excess fat cells. This is especially true in areas that gain a lot of fat as individuals age (i.e. the stomach area). Once this excess fat has been lost, the structure of the skin may have been compromised, making it difficult to retract to its original, taut state.

'One of the most common concerns I hear from patients is about hooded upper eyelids, giving them an aged and tired appearance that is completely at odds with how they feel. The great news is that a blepharoplasty procedure on the eyelids can be hugely helpful at a relatively low cost and short recovery time.'
