GLAUCOMA TREATMENT

Glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve that takes information from the eyes to the brain. Most commonly this happens in conjunction with high pressures in the eye. It is known as the silent thief of vision as your visual field is reduced so slowly that you do not realise it is happening. Whilst glaucoma can’t often be cured, we can often halt it in it’s tracks, or slow progression significantly. Glaucoma is often suspected by your optometrist, and then our state of the art diagnostic equipment coupled with expert doctors, will help diagnose and monitor the condition.

Often glaucoma has no symptoms. This is why it is really important to have regular eye tests with your optometrist. They will detect the early signs of glaucoma and send you for the full suite of investigations. There are several risk factors for glaucoma, the most important being family history, so if anyone in your family has glaucoma it is important you have an eye health check every year. Once a diagnosis has been made, an appropriate treatment or monitoring program will be agreed with you.

Once diagnosed, treatment options for glaucoma might include; eye drops, laser or surgery, or a combination of these treatments. Your ophthalmologist at The REAL Clinic will form a treatment plan taking into consideration a host of different factors, and will discuss the options available, before making their recommendations. Treatment is effective, but usually requires long term monitoring, and as such we look forward to a long relationship maintaining your sight.

Glaucoma is a very complicated disease with many varying symptoms, some of which include; pain, headaches, halos around light sources, misty vision, blurred vision, light sensitivity, coloured rings surrounding white lights, impaired vision and sight loss. Because there are a number of types of glaucoma, a series of tests will need to be carried out to confirm a diagnosis. The type of glaucoma you have will determine the appropriate treatment.

Some people are more prone to developing glaucoma than others and factors that contribute to this are; ethnicity, genetics, health conditions such as diabetes, short sightedness and low blood pressure. Once diagnosed, treatment options for glaucoma might include; eye drops, laser, trabeculectomy surgery, aqueous shunt implantation or MIGS. Your ophthalmologist at The REAL Clinic will be able to help with diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma depending on your symptoms and the type of glaucoma you have.

QUESTIONS ABOUT GLAUCOMA TREATMENT

  • How is glaucoma diagnosed?

Your ophthalmologist will carry out a full health check of your eyes if you present any of the aforementioned symptoms. Because early stage glaucoma often presents no symptoms at all, it is common for signs of glaucoma to be picked up during a routine eye test at which point you would be referred for more exploratory testing.

  • Will I go blind if I have glaucoma?

The aim of all treatments for the onset of glaucoma are to preserve sight. Medical intervention has progressed rapidly over recent years, and there are many ways in which we can help mitigate the symptoms of and slow the progress of, glaucoma. It is even possible to stop it in its tracks and halt further progression of glaucoma. It is true that there is a possibility that blindness could be the final outcome of glaucoma, although treatment has been developed to lower the pressure in your eyes and prevent damage to the optic nerve. Treatment for glaucoma has a high success rate and the earlier glaucoma is detected, the more optimistic the prognosis.
