Everything you ever need to know about Coolsculpting
You may have heard the term ‘Coolsculpting’ and wondered just what it is and how it works. Well, in this blog we’re going to explore what it is, how it works and most importantly; if it works!
Let’s start with what Coolsculpting actually is. Coolsculpting is a brand name for the ‘fat freezing’ technique Cryolipolysis. There are a number of alternate brands that banish fat in similar ways using cryolipolysis, but Coolsculpting is the number one global brand operating in over 70 countries worldwide. With the most peer reviewed documents for a device of its kind, Coolsculpting is a firm favourite with practitioners and patients alike.
Cryolipolisis was discovered by pure accident way back in 1970 when Dr. Harvard noticed something curious happened to the cheeks of children when they sucked on frozen popsicles; they developed dimples. This intrigued Dr. Harvard, and following much research and having forged partnerships with scientists Rox Anderson & Dieter Manstein, they realised that this was due to the popsicle breaking down the fat cells in the cheeks, and killing them. Permanently. Of course, this is a much condensed version of the story, but it helps give context to how a theory became a revolution and how fat freezing became one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in living memory.
Coolsculpting works on effectively the same principles as the popsicles, but through carefully administered application cups using controlled cooling. Controlled cooling is important in the case of fat freezing, because much larger areas of fat are being targeted. During treatment, the application cups are placed on the skin with a gel pad which acts as a barrier between the extreme cold and the surface of the skin. This is to ensure that the skin doesn’t blister and isn’t harmed by the extreme temperature.
The excess fat is then ‘sucked’ into the cup, and controlled cooling is applied to the area of concern. The fat is then ‘frozen’ beyond temperatures it can withstand so that the fat breaks down and the dead fat cells are eliminated via the body’s natural lymphatic processes. A little post treatment massage of the area will help to evenly distribute the freezing effects as well as jump start the process of breaking down the fat ready to be expelled.
So that covers what Coolsculpting is and how it works, but what we still need to learn is:
Does Coolsculpting work?
In short, yes. Coolsculpting really does work. It’s particularly effective at targeting and eliminating pockets of stubborn fat that can’t be shifted through diet and exercise alone. It is important to know that while Coolsculpting is a very successful method of treating unwanted fat, it is not designed to be an alternative to healthy weight loss. People with extreme amounts of fat to lose should always look at diet and exercise as their first port of call, and once a healthy lifestyle and weight has been established, Coolsculpting can then be administered to help along those particularly stubborn pockets of fat that remain.
Coolsculpting boasts the ability to permanently reduce the number of fat cells in the treated area by a massive 25%. This can be life changing, particularly for people who have been trying to shift left over stubborn fat with little success.
